This ‘Thank You From #Ultra2017’ video says so much about the three days Miami’s festival that happened last week (March 24 – 26). As a recap, this article will go through Ultra Miami 2017 best moments and highlights, truly the world’s premier electronic music festival.
Each year the audience coming to Ultra Miami Festival seems to be larger. Though I don’t yet have the final attendance number, in 2016 alone it was 165,000 people, like 10,000 more than previous years. Just one anticipated conclusion: “Electronic dance music (EDM) is here to stay.”
Having previously been to many other Ultra Music Festivals in Miami, this edition got me really excited all alone. For some reason, each day by sunset, we could experience what I consider the best performances at Ultra this year. It’s hard to put the best 3, 5 or 10 best moments of Ultra Miami 2017 or the best music acts of this year’s festival edition. The truth is that UMF ended on a fruitful high note, taking all the days combined. It was full of IDs, good vibe, rain, cake throws, interviews, you name it.
DJ Snake was tasked with the festival’s closing act. Here’s what we have to say. DJ Snake is a very talented rising DJ, currently ranking number 22 on DJ Mag after debuting in the magazine’s Top 100 DJs poll in 2016. It must have been imposingly hard for him to do any better than what he did, specially after so many veterans headliners. He was great. He was intense. He even graced it when he brought Future on stage. But he was not the expected best act for Ultra Miami 2017.
Though we spoke about the festival’s best highlights during each day, here is a recap of Ultra Miami 2017 best moments:
Best 10 music acts:
1- Hardwell, one of the most listened DJs in electronic music, got on the stage in a blaze of powerful beats, exactly the kind of magic that keeps his fans so excited for his acts during Ultra Miami year after year.
2- Tiësto drove the crowded insane on Ultra 2017 day 2, proving he is at his age, the greatest among the greatest. It was impossible for the rain to make the least dent on his act. Tiësto nonstop played all possible great songs he has ever made, guiding the ebbs and flows as a master he is. As LED light effects and pyrotechnics flashed from the stage, Tiësto was superb, and Ultra seemed to really be much more fun in the rain.
3- Armin van Buuren is one of the most versatile DJ’s in today’s electronic music. He lived up to his own motto ‘do not be a prisoner of your own style‘ during his act at Ultra Miami Festival on day one. The attendance to his act at the Bayfront Park MainStage was massive and Armin van Buuren delighted everyone with his quirky smile, and of course his music, the transcendent language we all love and enjoy; especially when he presented at Ultra his new track called “My Symphony Of You.” No matter how many times you hear his Hardwell collaboration – Off The Hook – you feel like is the first time. Here’s a proof…
4- We’ve seen Afrojack’s mom present with him behind UMF Radio’s deck sets. She was seen parting the whole time. Afrojack has been doing EDM for such a long time now and he really knows how to get it done. That was exactly what we witnessed at #Ultra2017. The man who says “music has the power to broaden horizons”, remixed for over 60 minutes during day 2, showing the potential of his new releases and collaborations.
5- Steve Aoki is passionate about music, life and full of energy. Steve is known for always having a few tricks up his sleeve at his insanely popular EDM concerts, death-defying stunts, cake-throwing and inflatable life raft-surfing. Add surprises too, which this year was 1/4 of One Direction, Louis Tomlinson. For those of you who have not yet experienced a Steve Aoki concert, here’s a recap…
6- David Guetta is one of those DJs who has had the most collaborations ever and on UMF’s Saturday at LIV Miami, he had a blast — though who doesn’t have a blast at LIV Miami? Day 3 of Ultra Miami Music set for Guetta was a unique moment this year, as unique as the song he had specially made for the weekend. Greatness in the flesh! See it yourself…
7- Nicky Romero revealed during an interview at UMF he’s a big fan of Flume, he likes what Marshmello is doing, and he’s got his eye on the vibes Kygo made popular. Interesting, right? Nice guy! And he was great at closing the Worldwide Stage, he surprised the audience, he innovated, he literally made everyone lose it — in the best musical sense of the word. This is a specially what a headliner tasked with closing is expected to do. Nicky made it impressive with with all the lights and imagery displayed collectively.
8- Major Lazer was the only and one act that turned Miami crazy. Literally, yes! Miami is a very cosmopolitan city ripped with a multitude of Latin cultures and its diversity makes it Ultra Music Festival’s flagship city. There’s no doubt the electro-dancehall trio Major Lazerput an enormous effort and won the crowd with Caribbean-tinged hit like Daddy Yankees’ ‘La Gasolina’. (By the way, ‘La Gasolina’ was the most mixed Latin hit at Ultra 2017; Afrojack and Hardwell also gave it their own twist)
9- Dutch house DJ and producer Fedde Le Grand is one of those DJ’s who really nails it when he remixes, like the ones he has famously done of Coldplay, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Naughty Boy. During his act at Ultra Music Festival 2017 Day 3, Le Grand got the crowd very hyped to the beat of every house, electro house, tech house, and progressive house sound of his set.
10- Patrick Topping played at The Resistance, powered by Arcadia Spider, the 50 ton, 20 meter tall structure made of fully recycled materials. I had not heard of him before; but Patrick delivered the best act at the Resistance stage and kept the vibe at the Arcadia Spider going with every techno beat. British DJ Patrick Topping graced the decks perfectly and was hands down, one of the best acts at Ultra Miami this year.
Ultra 2017 best interview
During this year’s UMF, one awesome development was to have a studio at Bayfront Park where all stars could drop by a few minutes prior to their set and talk to fans on the Ultra Music live stream feed. We want to give a special mention to the host of ULTRA Music Festival live stream on YouTube, Andrea Helfrich. This beautiful, gracious journalist who loves all things beauty, fashion, music, camera and travel, did an excellent job and she reminded us she’s got the coolest job in the world.
Andrea’s best interview happened on the first day when she talked to Martin Garrix — no hard feelings wished to the rest of the guys interviewed any other day. Here’s her interview with a DJ who has much to appreciate to the EDM family that year after year comes to Miami, a stage that has seen him grow up and become so successful in his career.
